Hey all, Doing Small Body Guitar #2 -- another Ditson style. This one is going to be an Oakie -- Oak back and sides. I have decided on Mahogany bindings and end graft.... and a Mahogany tile Rosette... but need some Opinions 1. Sapwood In Attachment: Oakie 3.JPG 2. Sapwood Out Attachment: Oakie 2.JPG 3. Alternating Attachment: Oakie 1.JPG Tell me what you think? Thanks John |

I would go for the first one. A wide ring to showcase the gradient color. The alternating one looses the continuity IMO. |

Can you overlay the lines for the rosette's size, and where it falls on the wood tiles? That will help us vote more intelligently. Steve |

Here is a pic of the other one. Attachment: Ditson_build_136.JPG The tiles are each 5/8" tall. I basically like the tile size on the small body. I will shift it out a smidge on this one so it isn't as close to the soundhole. I will try to overlay the Rosette outline on my pics later tonight. Thanks |

If you are going to separate the pieces with purfling like your last then I like the alternating too. |

Alternating ,think black lines would give a nice contrast. |

I'm with Steve, I can't tell unless you mask off 'the rest'. On instinct, I think the sapwood in would look most elegant. |

Of the pictures you've shown, I like the "sapwood in" best. Joe |

I'm for alternating. Based on your pics, gives it a 'ripple' effect, not unlike flame in maple, etc. |

Take a piece of paper and make a cutout of the rosette, then take some more pics. It may look very different only seeing the ring that will be left. The alternating may not look as cool then. |

Ok... here's some overlays. I think the idea of sapwood/heartwood in each tile isn't working out right -- the natural sapwood line isn't distinct enough. I think this would be a different discussion with Walnut. I will have to do some strategic cutting to make it work out correctly.... so it may not be in the cards. I also think the idea of black purfling strips between tiles is a good one. John, that helps a great deal. Nothing like seeing what you're going to see that really helps you to see. Or so they say... Anyway, thoughts: the "Alternating Sapwood", and the "Sapwood Out" have the misfortune of looking like the builder can't make grain lines meet each other. It looks a bit slapdash. "Alternating Light/Dark" has some obvious purpose to it, but I'm not overly fond of pulsating block rosettes. That's just me...so take that with many grains of salt. "Sapwood In" has an almost monochrome look, but with subtle darkening as the ring expands. This is my favorite of the four. There's some stuff for ya. Steve |

Sapwood in. Definitely. With the dark of the soundhole, it will give a good balance. |

Im a fan of the Alternating Sapwood. Nice affect without being as harsh as the Alternating Light/Dark. |
