Post subject:  1st cutaway neck and tail block question

I am working on my first cut away. I cut a slot in my mold and trimmed the ends of the sides to fit accordingly. THEN I realized that the cutaway has to be a certain distance from then center line in order for the 14 fret to fit flush. I cut mine alittle to close to the center line. So I measured the fret board I intend to use and it was 2.3" at the 14th fret 1/2 of which would be 1.150" which is where I cut the new slot in the mold for the cutaway.

When i clamp the sides nice and tight in the mold there is about a 1/4" gap at the tail block and 1/8" at the neck.
Do these need to butt up against each other tightly? I can get them very close if I dont clamp my sides in the mold.

Not sure how to proceed. My thought is to clamp the sides in the mold and glue up the neck and tail blocks with the gaps since those areas will be cut out for the end graft and the binding at the cut away.

Any more experience thoughts are welcome
As always THANKS

Richard

I'll defer to the experts, but it seems to me like you are going to route most of the material at those joints away anyway (tail wedge and mortise).

Yep. That would be the way to go. Been there, done that. Quite a few times actually!

Hmmm...
Are you making a Florentine or Venetian?

its has to be tight at the neck joint, at least I would do it that way. Then fill the remaining gap at the tail with the wedge.
