Post subject:  My First Acoustic Guitar

Hello,

I've been around on these forums lurking and reading various insightful posts about what it is to be a luthier. This is a post about the first guitar I made. I made it under the instruction of Bruce Roper of Chicago IL. Most parts came from Stewart Macdonald. What does everyone think of the shots that I got of it?

-Spruce AA Top
-Mahogany Sides
-Magogany Back
-Spruce Bracing (X-Bracing)
-Curly Maple Siding
-Bolt On Neck
-F-30 Body Type
-Mother of Pearl V Inlay (For V Music)

Looks jsut great for a first effort to me !! Same as my first acoustic, I kept it simple with no side, top or back purf . Routing that ledge scared the heck out of me !!!!

Welcome to OLF Robert, you are off to a great start with that guitar. What's your next build going to be?

Simple, clean lines and very pretty. It reminds me of the older Gibsons - I like it. Make more man.

It sounds like something sugar coated, very true sound, it resounds with power underneath the sugar sound.

I'm definitely planning to make more but I don't have the time! I'm going off to college in just two months and I'm not going to have a workshop in Boston! It's very disappointing. But I will be doing guitar repairs, hopefully. I wish I had all the equipment in my dorm room...

Very well done!

Take a look around town for 'rentable' shop space. In Portland we have a few, ranging from artist's studio space to full on fab shop setups. Might be a really good idea to have somewhere away from school and studies to decompress once in a while...a chance to commune with the wood grain as it were. :-)

College can be a great place for guitarmaking! I finished three guitars in college using hand tools in my dorm room and a woodshop on campus. I even convinced the school to pay for materials for two of them with grants for the Arts.

A half-braced soundboard is a good conversation starter, too.

Robert, very nice guitar and great first effort! I really like how the mahogany turned out, nice job.

You have to be proud to build a guitar and play it yourself!

Huh. I never thought about BU having a workshop! My highschool didn't have a workshop. That's very cool about the arts grant.

I am fairly sure there is a woodshop at BU, actually--within the School of Visual Arts. You might even be able to score a student job as a tech in the shop. Good luck!
