Gotoh open back tuners - SE510 series

Does anyone know where these can be had in the US? I have called LMI and they said the only way to get them is a special order (25+ sets) and Stewmac doesn't do special orders, per the lady I spoke with. I doubt they want something of equal quality that competes with Waverlys at 1/2 - 2/3 the price. I know that allparts can special order them in smaller quantities but at their prices you might as well buy Waverlys.

The 700 series is what LMI and Stewmac carries in stock. The 700 and 510 open backs look identical except for the script below the gear wheel says 510 instead of GOTOH. Click on the link for the 2008 Gotoh catalog - http://www.sounds-planet.com/gotoh_catalog/gotoh-e/gotoh-index.html and then the SE510/SE button to see the difference. There are a bunch of options - just click on any part of the page and it will open up a larger picture for better viewing.

The SE510, SE510M and SE510W are the same except for the spacing of the mounting screws. They all can come with normal posts, magnum locking posts (these work nice) or the 2 different HAPs (Height Adjustable Post). They all can come with any of the 10 different buttons or any finish (nickel, chrome, gold, cosmo black, X-finish nickel, X-finish chrome and X-finish gold). The Gotoh site is a little confusing - they don't explain some of the option codes. Hope this helps.

Edit: Hey Shane Neifer - can you get these buddy? I know you are a Gotoh dealer and I would rather give you my money anyway.

John was looking at a few different options in a nickel tuner so once I get those prices I will post them here so you all have an idea what you would be looking at. As John mentioned GOTOH has a lot of options but most companies won't take the time to special order. That is mostly what I do with Gotoh. If my distributor does not have them in stock, I can usually get them from Japan in 3 to 4 weeks so a little planning allows for some unique options! And not just in the open back models [:Y:] !

Thanks

Shane

Well, I'd certainly be interested if the quality is similar to their closed back 510's. John (or anyone else), have you tried them? How do they compare to other open backs, like Waverlys?

In looking at my catalog, there is one difference between the 510 and 700 series that you might want to consider ...

the 510 plate has a flange that is 8.7mm in diameter by 4mm deep that will require a definite countersink int he headstock for the plate to mount flush. The 700s have a smaller 7.5x2mm flange that locks the post to the plate.

I havent tried the 510s, but have installed a bunch of the 700 series, both slab and slot head style. They work great IMO. The post gear is twice as wide as a waverlie and provides a solid worm/gear mesh.

I will have some in Montreal ....

The quality is the same as their closed back, but the gear ratio is different. At 15:1, you get a bit more string feel when tuning.

Many feel that the Gotoh 510-series are far better than Waverlies, including at least one employee of Stew-Mac (I was there for the conversation).

Hi-

I will be using one of these SE510 sets on an older guitar that needs a bunch of work, so hopefully I can give you a heads up on how well these work compared to the Waverly machines. It might be a while but I'll let everyone know.

Thanks-

Hey, how did the Gotoh 510 open backs compare to the 700's and the Waverlys? (and the Grovers as long as we're at it)

I'm with Ernie and would like to hear how the 510's have worked out for anyone who tried them. Tony K had mentioned that installation required some countersinking into the headstock...anybody find this to be more difficult than other, similar models?
Brian and Scott....The Padma made the response on this thread when it was started in 2009, so I think it's safe to say he is not back "so soon".
