Post subject:  Alternative to DUCO Cement
Hello all!
Read on the net that Duco cement is a good way to temporarily hold inlay (shell) to a work piece for scribing as it frees up with acetone. Having difficulty finding it up here in Canada. Does anyone know of a suitable alternative? The tech info for Duco says it is a nitro cellulose household cement.

Thanks for the input Bob, Chris. I'm going to test some model glue and acetone and see how that works first. The backup plan will be white glue.

Rick, if you want to stick with "duco" type stuff, I get my "weld-on 16" from Warehoused Plastic on Wilkinson Rd. (off Dixie)

If you are using it for holding inlay pieces you will only be using a small dot that usually ill come off with placing a razor blade under it or an exacto blade. The use of acetone is only for small delicate pieces that are over glued on. You only want enough glue on it to keep it from slipping around while tracing or etching around it, depending on what method you are using. Just as a note, when I do an inlay I usually have one sheet of paper with the inlay printed out on it that I spray with and adhesive and when I cut the piece then I stick it to the paper pattern. If it's a group of pieces and say for a fretboard then after fitted I'll put wax paper on a wood radius sanding caul and put the pieces face down and CA them together as one piece.

TX Dave - we'll give the model glue a go and see if that does the trick. If not, I'll check out the Weld-on 16.

Chris, TX for the radius tip. FYI, the inlay I am about to set is the one pictured in my avatar. As you can see there are several small pieces so I really don't think I have any other choice than to tack them down for scribing.

Are you going to glue them all together as one piece first? It's hard to tell the size but I remember seeing it before and if my memory serves me right it's pretty small. You could lay it down face up if the shell is the same thicknesses or lay it face down so the the top will be even if it's different thicknesses. Are you inlaying it into a FB or a flat head plate? To me it looks like a perfect piece to glue together with CA as one piece and a dab of model glue on the back and a #11 exacto blade to scribe the outside and a pointed scribe for the inside cuts and a little chalk dust and you're good to go. Just scribe lightly as not to slip or pop the piece off if it's really small. Or make one of pantograph/ duplicator like Keith's. :)
