Post subject:  Asymmetrical Soundholes

Thinking of doing an asymmetrical sound hole like McPherson on the upper bout. This raises a few questions but the one that is burning my ameteur brqin tonight is how the heck would you route the channel for a rosette or purflings that follow the asymmetrical design. Thinking this is a jig that needs to be built to guide the router.

Any posts in the archives ???

Any pros/cons of doing something like this. ?

Use a template, glue or double-stick it directly to the top where the soundhole will be.

Route out the rosette channel with a bearing so that it's 'out' from the soundhole however much it needs to be, then route around the template almost all the way through with a small bit (so it doesn't fall out!) and finish up with a scalpel.

Bob's suggestion would work well. I've done rosettes on odd shaped holes using a marking gauge, knife, and chisel. It al depends on whether you have better chops with hand tools or machine tools.

Martin

That is wild - how does it sound? How about volume?

Al: My chops aren't that good!!! Think I'll have to experiment with Bob's approach

Rich, I've had two guys play it. (I can't as I injured my left middle finger, but that's another story)

Anyway, both these guys are serious players.

Al has a Lowden & a Takamine and leads worship along with me in church.

Paddy is a semi pro guitarist who owns Lowden#00001, a McPherson, a Takamine, McIlroy, Larivee, Martin, Seagull etc, etc, etc.

both were amazed at the volume, and as the recipient of their playing "front of house" I have to say it didn't sound any quieter than a regular guitar.

both commented (separately) that the tone was crisp and defined. both said it had a lot more bass than they owuld have expected.

I WANT MY FINGER TO GET BETTER!!!!!! [headinwall]
