Hi all! I am at the point of getting ready to install my end wedge (ivoroid) but would love to see some of y'alls ideas, both traditional and unique.

I started to title this "show me your butt wedges" but was afraid of the response! Also, googling that isn't particularly helpful..

I'll post a pic of mine when I get it done.

Ahh...the end wedges...always caused me some headaches and were a good reminder that it's still a long way to go to get my craftmanship where I want it to be... I'll show the pics anyway...
The wedges are fairly basic. The maple wedge (walnut back/sides) is from my first guitar. I learned that maple binding needs a really really tight fit...and that wicking CA glue + wood dust into the small gap leaves a somewhat darker shade :D Maybe my wood dust was contaminated...

This here is from my second (current) guitar...it's still in the middle of the finishing process...bloodwood wedge and bubinga back/sides. I originally wanted to have mitred purfling again, but had a little accident with my router idunno

R W Goodman, What kind of wood did you use for the backs and sides on that guitar. I like that look.

I had a hard time with this on my first guitar. I wanted to use maple binding, and when it came time to make the end wedge, I used a piece of maple that was 1/8" thick. I had a hard time making it look clean, and actually cut two of them, installed them and took em each out to try again. the third time, the charm, I used maple 1/16" veneer and it was much easier. here it is, not yet finished, and wetted with alcohol.

This is Brazilain and bees wing narra. At least its part of a wedge.

Black and White ebony with ebony wedge.

My end grafts are pretty straight forward. Nothing really fancy.

Not a wedge, but I like it.

Recently I did a Luthier Tips du Jour video on end wedges. At the end of the video I include a bunch of examples of end wedges from folks here on the OLF. See the link below.

Been using the same style for 10 years, some with purfling lines, some without. Can also use at the neck heel area to frame that end of the sides, too.

Thanks Robbie - your Tips du Jour videos and the DVD are some of my main sources of information! Thanks for all you do!

I went ahead and cut for the wedge tonight. I found that the ivoroid material is a few thousandths thinner than the sides, so I built my channel up with some mahogany veneer and will sand that down a hair and try again tomorrow.

Any tips for truing up the side walls of the channel? I can see a spot where my saw must have wandered a hair.

thanks,
adam

Here's a pic of the mahogany veneer build up... just enough (I hope) to push the ivoroid proud of the surface for scraping.

Here ar emy last two, using side offcuts. It works better with more figured wood, though.

Here's one that I can never seem to get finished, seems I've had it kicking around the shop for ages. It’s ziricote with curly ash bindings and rosewood purflings. I’m not a big fan of wedgies…
