Post subject:  Fisheyes......... I HATE fisheyes

The guitar before last had fisheyes in the KTM-9 [xx(] , bad but managable. The next one had no problems. This one has fisheyes in the Z-poxy! Has anyone else had problems in the epoxy stage? I did not know it was even POSSIBLE to have hundreds of fisheyes in the grain filler. I'm beginning to think it might be a problem with the sandpaper, I used the Norton grey 320 grit from HD. Possibly a bad batch of paper ?!?!?? Someone told me that naptha will get rid of the silicone on the finish and allow you to continue on without sanding completely back to bare wood. Help! Help!

I hear ya! Annoying aren't they?! What kind of wood is giving you all this grief? I thin out the Z-Poxy finishing resin a bit with de-natured alcohol - it seems to help a bit, but then you have to give it 3 coats of Z-Poxy to make sure all the pores are filled. Can't win! gaah

I'm not sure what you mean by having to sand back to the bare wood - you're supposed to do this between coats of Z-Poxy filler anyway I thought, so that you end up with a totally flat surface with all the pores filled (they should look like tiny shiny dots when you are done)...?

I thought I'd heard it wasn't only silicone deposits that did this, but pretty much any mineral deposit in the pores. I'd like to learn more about this if anyone knows the whole truth here......

Cheers,
Dave F.

The problem could be stearates in the sandpaper. I am not familiar with the Norton brand, so you might want to check that out.

Jack replies: As long as you are still seeing "shiny spots", the pores are not completely filled.

At least it's not fish heads!

I'd look to another source for the contamination. Norton sandpaper is all I use and I've not had any fisheye problems.

contamination: Fish eyes are craters that have a bit of material remaining in the center.
Water, oil and silicone are the three major culprits. Air supply (needs good filtration, no oil, no water, extremely clean), environment (are you around any silica sand producers, is there any caustic or acid around, etc...),
