Here's one that's been on and off the bench several times since I started on it in August, waiting for the customer to do the inlay and gather funds as he struggled with life situations due to the sour economy.

Based on the excellent drawing from Mark Swanson.

Honduras mahogany B & S from BobC
Honduras mahogany neck with CF
Lutz top from Shane
x-braced top and back, tapered
Ebony FB, bindings and headstock veneers
BRW bridge
Brushed Behlen's Rockhard Tabletop Varnish
Grover 18:1 Sta-Tites

The headstock inlay was done by my customer. It's a profile of him in partial shadow. He wanted me to build the guitar I would build for myself, so this is what I came up with, which makes it extra tough to ship it out.

Thanks for looking.

Pat

Beauty, Pat!! It looks great. Is the color on the top from the rockhard or a sealer coat? I love the color. Whose recipe did you follow for the brushing? I may be trying it pretty soon. That sounds like a great situation to be able to build one exactly how you wanted., Congratulations.

Thanks, fellas.

Burton, I followed Alan Carruth's schedule pretty much, and wiped on a very thin final coat on the neck before final polish. I used a wash coat of blond shellac, with LMI's Micro-bead filler on the B & S and neck, so the top color is from the varnish.

The toughness of the Rockhard really shows when it's time to scrape it away for gluing the bridge and BR extension.

I like it Pat. One of my favorite shapes and sizes
BTW, Pat you might try routing away the finish rather than scraping it. Its easier, (I think) and you have a lot of control over the depth of cut. I usually go 5 mils down with the router (dremmel in a router base) and then cut a 6 mil lip on the bridge so that I am sure to get good wood to wood contact with a little overlap (1mm) to hide the joint. The one mill gap between the bottom of the bridge lip and the top of the finish is invisible.

Nice guitar Pat! I love the clean lines that the ebony binding gives it especially. [:Y:] [clap] [:Y:] [clap] [:Y:]

I don't "see" the headstock inlay though - I honestly can't make out any human shape or form in there.....it's what he wanted though....the customer's always right!!

Cheers,
Dave F.

John,

Thanks for the tip. Seems like it would be much easier, less risky too, doing it that way.

Dave,

Thanks. I can't see it either. I don't think there were any facial features in it, just the profile of his head and shoulders, and shadow. I think.

Great looking guitar, Pat. You are really getting the hang of that varnish finishing. I'll be finishing my first with Rockhard in a month or so, I'll bug you for advice...

Arnt,

Bug me all you want. Not a problem. I owe you one for your binding jig design. I have to warn you though, I've only done 3 with the Rockhard.

Why no fret markers? Not that it matters, just curious.

I too will be using Rockhard for the first time over the coming days. I'll be spraying for the first time as well and I just hope it looks half as good as yours.

Thanks for sharing

Mat,

Thanks.

My customer wanted a minimum of bling. He wanted an "all-business" look and didn't want fretboard markers, only the ones on the side. Functionally, I think BR markers are mostly so others can tell what you're doing. ;)

Good luck with the spraying. I've only brushed it, and it is quite labor intensive, but worth the effort.
