Post subject:  UTG question /and swap meet problem<lol

Hey All!
I been pretty busy about the home and garden lately... and have been managing to get some stuff done in the shop also... I was wondering one thing - I glued on my upper transverse graft,,, and I notice on the plans that it only extends to about an inch and a half ("or so") from the upper bouts,
Is this intended to allow that area of the top to resonate more freely? (while obviously strengthening the neck block area).
That seems to make sense, however I inadvertantly glued on a piece that extends to the sides of the upper bout... and I was wondering if I started a taper where the UTG usually ends and taper it quite shaply and thin to the sides... would this have a negative impact on the instrument?
Any input would be appreciate very much and thanks in advance for any answers....
Secondly - I notice the swapapalooza is coming up soon... it always seems to fall when Im broke --- But the reason Im broke is a good thing.. I know alot of luthiers dont even use a table saw - but I was offered such a good deal on one that I couldnt resist!
I had a friend who had a Delta X5 5hp left tilt table saw that was essentially buried under his wifes packrat stuff - He really wanted to see it used... so he offered it to me for $1500 incl an incramitre fence, and dado set, a 80 tooth rip blade and a general purpose blade - also a couple magnetic featherboards etc..
Its only been used once for a project involving cutting up some maple.... so its essentially new.... Im pretty stoked... he is even allowing me to pay in installments cause he knows Im on a fairly fixed income - all around a good deal!
I think anyhow....
So no splurging on the swap meet however Ill be in ripping heaven LOL..
Now Ill have even more jigs in my shop AARRRRGGGHHH,,,,
Itll be worth it I guess,
Cheers
Charlie

Charlie that's a serious score on that table saw. Congrats.

Sweet talk the honey of the house...see if she'll loan you some dough for the swap meet!
bliss bliss

BTW - I don't think your plans to fix your UTG will have a negative impact on the instrument...but then I've only built 3.

Hey, Charlie, good to see you posting and doing well. Great score on the saw!

I think you'd be fine with your plan on the UTG. I couldn't say whether there would be an audible difference between a full-length UTG and one that doesnt extend to the sides, but what you're proposing should be fine.
