Post subject:  What glue for a neck crack?

I noticed a crack in the back of one of my "factory" guitars near the headstock. I glued it 6 months ago with LMI white, but it appears to be back. I have LMI white, CA (thin and thick) and access to Titebond. No HHG though

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Laurie

Can you flex it open any more than that?

That is some squirrley grain in that neck. No wonder it broke.

That is some funky grain. The problem is, now that there is white glue in there, any glue you manage to get in now wont adhere to the old stuff. Probably time to call in a professional to look at it first hand.

Laurie,

Who is the manufacturer? It's possible (if you're the original owner) that they'll replace the neck for you at an authorized service location. That's an obvious manufacturing flaw that should have been stopped at QC. They may even send you another neck if you want to take a shot at it but that would likely void any warranty if you have one. :D If there were no warranty and it were mine, I'd probablty make another neck for it just for practice. :) I wish you well with it.

Thanks for the replies. The grain is far from quartersawn, but the guitar is an entry level one, so I'm not surprised. The problem is this guitar is one of the best playing in the fleet (I have 11), so I'm quite partial to it.

As for the comments...

Barry: Yes, I can flex it open and close it with some elbow grease.

Bill: It is a "Simon and Patrick Luthier" S&P6 spruce/mahogany. I am not the original owner, but I think it was played 6 times before I bought it. I figured they would say I dropped it and cuased the crack (which I didn't), so I haven't pursued it yet. I'll check with a dealer for fun to see what they say...

Hi Laurie,

Simon & Patrick is made by Godin guitars in Que. It's similar to Seagull(another of their line) so I would think that the neck is a bolt on with the F.B. ext. glued. I've replaced a couple of Seagull necks under warranty so you may be able to get one through the dealer that you purchased the guitar from and install it yourself. The install is straight forward and the only thing you will need to do is floss the replacement neck to ensure the angle and the fit is good.

Go for a warranty replacement neck it's worth a try, but even if you have to buy one it shouldn't cost too much. If the dealer won't cooperate, go direct to Godin, they are very reputable.

I've seen this repair done many times over the years. I think you use a screw or a bolt or something. gaah
