I have been messing around with some funky flat sawn Mahogany trying to perfect my bending technique. I used the worst Mahogany I had in the shop not wanting to waste any decent stuff. I have been getting quite a bit of spring back. I did a bend with Ken Franklin and we dubed this particular wood "rubber wood". It's seems to be pretty unruly stuff. I mean it is really rubbery. Having never bent quartered Hog I am hoping that the answer to my question is "yes quartered bends much easier with less spring back than flat sawn." So do you guys think that flat sawn wood springs more than quartered ? Link |

Maybe, but not likely .. I think its defintely a wood type thing more than that. I always get more springback with mahogany, ziricote, koa, aus blkwood than any of the rosewoods. |

what is your method of bending. I use 375 degrees . Also how much water? I don't use much water and lots of heat. |

John, I am using a fox style bender, solid form, blanket on top, little to no water. Starting my bend at 280° to 300° , dropping the waist and leaving it up 3/4" or so and finishing after I bend the lower and upper bouts. Let the heat come up to 330° to 350° and then turn it down to 300° and let it cook for 35 minutes. I have even given it a second cooking bringing it back up to over 330° and then leting it cook for another 30 minutes. Let it sit over night and bingo, springo. Link |
