This one came in recently, the classic "too many monkeys jumping on the bed" resulting in the breaking of expensive instruments. Attachment: IMG_3154.JPG It is a nice oud, worth fixing i think, but the top is quite messed up, no major breaks or cracks, but the top has come loose from the bass side. The worst part is that the top has kind of potato chipped severely and sucked into the side, deforming the side outwards as the top warped down. Attachment: IMG_3157.JPG Attachment: IMG_3159.JPG The whole top is as i said severely warped, more so than it appears in the pictures, my first inclination is to make a new top for it, copying the old one as well as i can, or perhaps just removing and rebracing this top. The thing is, while i feel that i am competent enough to do a nice job, the finer points of what makes a nice oud are out of my realm of experience, and i would prefer to at least get some advice from someone experienced with these types of instruments, or ideally refer the customer to someone who does this regularly. Anyone, particularly anyone near upstate NY have any pointers or want to take over a cool repair job? |

There were a couple of nice essays in AL #94 and 95 on Peter Kyvelos building an oud. His address as listed in the magazines is 165 Belmont street, Belmont, MA 02478. No email address however. |

I wish I could help you, Jordan. I do have a good friend (and close neighbor) who plays oud. He's also a woodworker, but doesn't work on instruments to my knowledge. He might be able to refer you to the person who made his oud, or have other helpful ideas or resources to share. I just thought of another friend, also, who might have some useful info/ideas/resources for you. He's made some really cool, unique instruments, and is a very bright and resourceful guy. He's just down the road from me as well. I don't want to post their contact info here, but feel free to pm me if you want. |
