Post subject:  Buffing out peghead without damaging tuner holes...

I think this may have come up over on another thread concerning slotted pegheads but what do you guys do to prevent burning around the edges of the tuner holes? The obvious solution I know is to drill afterwards but I don't have that option right now on this one. It seems to be very easy to create a finish imperfection where the wheel comes up and out of the holes no matter how careful I am. I thought of maybe using something to fill the hole temporarily so the wheel can't go down into the hole to begin with. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

Are these regular holes for single tuners or the sideways into the head like a classical? If they're regular holes, I think you can buff away... I mean dont go completely wild. There are washers under some of the bushing inserts and unless you make BIG dips down into the holes (which I don't think you will with a good sized wheel) even just the bushings will cover things up. Mine did.

Light touch like Todd said. I just buffed mine last night with no problems. It's been 4 weeks curing.

I just came up stairs from buffing my Wedge body jumbo and the tuner holes were not an issue, but I needed to clean the Menzerna compound from the holes with a Q-tip. This is the second time I used a wheel buffer, it sure beats hand polishing.

I drill the holes after buffing.
