Post subject:  slothead finishing tips?

I'm ready to spray the sealer coat (nitro finish) on my first slothead. On paddleheads I just stick foam earplugs in the holes and spray away. What about a slothead? seems like the slot is going to be difficult to get a consistent thickness of finish. I'm envisioning runs, or no finish at all... probably doesnt need very much in there anyways.

Anyone have any tips/advice?

Thank you Todd,
I just want to make sure im not missing some step like masking around the slots and spraying them first or brushing laquer in there. Guess there is only one way to find out for sure and that is to "just do it" - make the coats really light in that area to avoid runs.

When i, and most people i have asked, spray slotted headstocks i just ignore the fact that it is slotted and spray normally. Enough lacquer gets in there, but not too much. I try not to skimp on the number of coats, because there are so many edges waiting to burn through while buffing.

You might want to get a prevail and spray the slots a bit with the prevail and then just spray the rest of the neck as usual. If you get some runs it's not that big of a deal, just sand them out before the next coat. I reall don't remember doing much different as they do seem to take care of themself with just a little attention paid to that area when spraying. As a matter of fact on my Tricone I sprayed the whole neck with a prevail. It was in the winter in PA and was snowing. I stepped out of the basement, sprayed the neck and went back it when done and let it hang infront of a half opened basement window to flash off.

nice little thing commonly used for touch ups when setting up a complete spray system would take too much time...
