Post subject:  laminated binding can it be mitred

Hi All I am on my third build and i thought I would try my hand at mitred purfling at the end graft. I usually use the laminated binding (see link)
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bindings,_t ... dings.html

from SM. Can this be trimmed and mitred or is it better to use separate pieces?

thanks

Sure it can be mitered. You just cut the purfling back to the appropriate point (half the width of the end graft) and miter it. It takes a little bit of fitting to get it right but it can be done. I have found that using CA to attach the binding works best for this as it allows you to get the miter fitting really tight.

The first time I mitred the purfs I took a few pictures of the process. It should
still be in the "OLF tutorials" if you want to have a look.

That's how i did it on my last 2 guitars (first 2 didn't have mitres); perhaps I am all wrong and slow at it, but at least it works:
After the endgraft is in, you start cutting the binding rebate. You start with a shallower cut first, only in the end graft area. It should be the full height minus purfling height. Then cut the full depth, stopping just short of the endgraft purfling. Make sure you do not cut the purfling... I use a gramil and finish with a chisel. Then use the chisel mirror trick to cut the graft purfling at 45 degrees. Next bend the binding, when it is done, start delaminating an appropriate lenght of purfling and bevel the end at 45 degrees again using the chisels mirror trick. Check the fit, cut some more purfling until it meets with the top joint line.

Get a copy of Cumpiano's "Guitarmaking..." book, it shows a very clear and methodical way to do this.
