I probably know the answer I'll get but, how would some of you fix a small sand thru? There are two spots I went thru to the wood. The guitar is polished up and I'd hate to have to start over. The finish is EM6000. Thanks, Jeff |

I did the same thing earlier this year. I cut out and bent to match a piece of the same material, epoxied it on the inside and pressed on. Anyone looking inside the box will see it, but... it's a repair, so what. Your still probably going to have to do some finish work again. Dave |

When re-applying more of the EM6000, you have to sand the area down to 320. Not the entire side mind you, but for a couple of inches around the sand through area, than touch up. Let it cure again for 1 week and level the area LIGHTLY and buff again. |

Welcome to the Holey-finish club. You are in good company. I am always amazed when John Hall talks about shooting 0.025"-0.030" worth of finish on.... to get a 0.006" finished thickness..... but it seems about right after levelling and all the other finishing... It just seems to take about 3x as much finish as seems sensible... I look at it and say "Holy Cow -- 40 lbs of finish...." and *Still* sand through because it wasn't thick enough...... After doing it one way for about 30 guitars (just shoot lac until it looks like there is enough) and then sanding out to buff, and giong thru about 1 in 4 .... I started doing a total 400 grit flat sand half way thru - if you happen to sand thru now, at least you know you are shooting more and can double shoot any trouble spots. The finishes have improved (with almost no rub thrus) ever since. |

I just did the same thing, with the same finish...! As was mentioned, rough up the area with 320 and then reshoot over the area to build enough thickness to level it out again. Then, do not wet sand....dry sand only...! I got some strange foggy lines when I attempted to wet sand a finish that was "touched up". Now that I've got this stuff figured out, I'm looking for my next EM6000 experience to go much smoother...! Good luck, Trev |

Whoo, I could write a book on sand throughs after this last build. The repairs wouldn't have been so challenging had I not gone through the shellac wash coat underneath. Now that's a challenge -- matching the shade of shellac to the surrounding area already under finish. I learned a huge lesson in all of that -- to be very generous when applying the finish. I also learned the importance of achieving as level a sprayed surface as possible, to minimize sanding and the possibility of sanding through in the first place. I've pretty much decided to just farm out finishes for commissioned guitars, at least till I get the process dialed in much better. Ken |
