Some days are just great...

After I decided to do the thicknessing, jointing, and bending from the next guitar on myself, I bought today a Lee Valley Low-Angle Jack Plane. That has to be one of the finest tools I ever owned. I can't wait to put it to work - and what happened just after I got home...the postman came with a Tiger Myrtle set from Stephen from Colonial Tonewoods. Not one of the super fancy figured ones, but an OM sized I bought for $125. And it's just gorgeous. bliss

Finally I decided to shape the next of my current built. For my first one, I bought a spokeshave, but didn't really like it, so I shaped it with a rasp. Today I thought - why not try how the spokeshave works AFTER being sharpened, so I put it through a japanese water stone treatment. Now I understand why some luthiers find neck shaping one of the most enjoyable parts of guitar building. And amazing to actually experience the difference between using a new tool and using a new tool after it was being sharpened. [clap] [:Y:]

just had to share :D

I got a Lee Valley low angle block plane for Christmas in '07 - what a treat, huh? And then everything else going so well to, cool!

Thanks guys,

I find it a bit funny when I look at how I purchased my tools...seems I started with the big guys first - at first glance a bandsaw or drill press looks so much more impressive than an old fashioned handplane. I mean I always had the tools I needed (and if I didn't then LMI would offer the service), but if I were to start all over again, I'd put my money into high quality hand tools and build my tool collection from there.

Christian, I agree with you. Good hand tools are inspiring to work with. A sharp well made hand plane is a beautiful thing. Tony
