Post subject:  hide glue clamp time / dry time

Hi all,

2 questions about using hide glue.

1) I know that hide glue functions as its own clamp, but in those instances when you must clamp (ie braces glued to a top, or a fingerboard on the neck) how long must the clamps be on for?

2) How long must one wait before you can assume the glue has dried and you can start working the piece?

Thanks,

Stefan

Times vary by your shop conditions, temp, humidity etc, but the question is in two catagories:
How long till unclamping?
How long till working?

You want those clamps for other work, so how long do you leave it clamped?
1 hr. minimum, depending how much clamping pressure it is under. If you are laminating a neck, lots of pressure, 3 or more hrs. I usually leave these overnight.

Bracing and light clamping stuff, 1 hr. is usually good.

How long till working? Overnight, or 24 hrs. Be patient, grasshopper.
