Hey all, In all my years of working on guitars, this is a first. I have a dead fret. #10, only on the E string just doesn't ring true. I've recrownded it, buffed it, worked the frets around it, and can't get it to sound like the note around it unless I press REALLY hard all right up next to the fret. This is on a new instrument. Any suggestions before I go drastic and relevel the whole fretboard will be appreciated. (I tried a few searches in the archives, but didn't see anything quite like this.) Thanks, Dave Livermore |

Sounds like a loose or unseated fret end to me. |

...which can usually be fixed with some CA glue. |

As stated check to see the fret is seated well and check the next fret and the neck relief. Finding the cause can be a pain. Also don't be afraid to change the string. I had a similar situation. I had a wear mark on the string that made it sit too low . Look at the underside of the string wear it touches the fret. Once you go through the obvious reasons , you have to look at the odd ball stuff. |

Kent and Arnt and John, You are DEAD on right with the dead fret. I found another one too, and upon looking REAL close at them, both frets are loose over the binding on the fingerboard. I can't wait to get home and put some super glue on them to check out if that takes care of it or not. THANKS SO MUCH! I thought I was going mad (at least more crazy than usual.) Dave |

It WORKED! I can't believe how easy that fix was. |
