I will be heading south to visit my wife's step mother in Maryville Tn and was wondering if there were any list members in that area and if there were any good tool stores or wood suppliers near by. I get easily bored with family visits so am always looking for something more interesting to do. Fred |

Hey Fred-- I'm from Knoxville. The only real tool place we have in town is Woodcraft, which is located in Knoxville's west side. It's not bad--pretty typical Woodcraft store. We have a Harbor Freight store too for what it's worth. As for wood, my favorite place is Jeffries' hardwoods. It's in South Knoxville, and is a little tricky to find but worth finding. Their stock is mostly geared towards cabinet makers, but you'll occasionally find instrument wood there too. I've gotten some really nice curly maple neck blanks from them, among other things, and they're very nice people. Dave |

Fred, Maryville is a nice town. I used to live there and my son still does. Most of my tools come from the internet - Woodcraft, HF and Northern tools and Equip are here but nothing special. I'll put in another plug for Jeffries Hardwood, Bob and Cynthia are great people. I've been dealing with them for about 10 yrs and I've found some nice stuff in there. Like Dave said, they are not an instrument wood shop but I've never come away empty handed. If you're interested in something specific just call and ask. They're just off Chapman Hwy at 8807 Valgro Rd, Knoxville 37920, 865-573-6367. Call for directions as they're not easy to find if you don't know where to look. If you like woodcarving stuff head up to Nawger's Nob in Townsend. Just go up Hwy 321 towards Smokey Mtns. Nat Park. On your left on the far end of town. You could be up there and back from Maryville in an hour and a half. |

Another thumbs up for Jefferies lumber. I'm about 100 miles south of them but make several trips a year. In fact.....the two guitars I'm finishing up now....the back, side & neck wood come from there. (had to resaw myself). Last time I was there I spent three hours looking and chatting with the owners. Real nice folks!! Check em out.... Jeff |

I stopped by Jeffries at lunch today. They had some nice 12/4 mahogany and a few red spruce guitar tops. They also had a bunch of 16/4 quarter sawn curly maple neck blanks that I should be able to get two archtop necks (without peghead ears) out of each. I also got some nice curly cherry neck blanks just the right size for one piece banjo necks. Hopefully they'll have some good instrument stuff when you get down here too Fred! Dave |
