From Lie-Nielsen's newsletter

Auriou Rasps are again being made by Michel Auriou at his new shop, Forge De Saint Juery. Production is very limited. Our first shipment has arrived - the first in North America - and when they are gone we can take your order for a future delivery in 2-3 months.

What are the favorites for neck carving? Under $1000.00 preferably? :)

Thanks Lillian,

It is good to see that Michel Auriou is at last back in business. The French 'TBT' rasp pointed out by Fillipo have been offered by 'The Best Things' since shortly after Michel Auriou closed shop. No doubt these are wonderful tools and with people once employed by Auriou on staff it is little wonder. But to see the Auriou hallmark once again alive is a good thing which gladdens the heart, well done Lie-Nielsen, and well done Michel Auriou for refusing to allow a centuries old family tradition become yet another victim of the global economy. Down with cheap crappy tools and long live suitable recognition of craftsman from all fields.

Cheers

Kim

For those of you who use Auriou Rasps, which sizes work best for you?

I think you want one with a point. I have the Swiss file from Woodcraft, for carving, fine and coarse, and it does the job pretty good. There is also the japanese cross-cut saw as in Kinkeads book, they run about $25.00.

But I seem to remember some really cool Aurias, very wide, rounded and tapered, like $175.00 or something. Did'nt see those in the link.

My current method of carving is to use the plane to facet the neck with various angles, then use the rasp at the end so Im not taking out huge chucks.
