hello all
This seems to good of a deal to pass up, and i thought someone here could use a bigger band saw. It is 3ph, but the seller says he has 1ph motor for $50 extra. I do not know much about band saws so, if this is not a good deal just void the topic.

That's close by.... Good thing I sold the pickup truck last year, there'd be trouble if I showed up with another big tool at this point.

It did make me jump a little, though.

Jim, you can rent a small Uhaul pick up for $15 a day.

Okay, no Uhaul.

Surely you have a friend that has a truck who wouldn't mind going on a road trip to help a friend out and maybe use the bandsaw every once in a while. Can you beat that price?

Lillian, I think Jim is trying to convey that he is sorely tempted, and is trying to resist in order to prevent local unrest of the domestic sort...

Is it worth the drive? I am 5 hours away. I am betting I'd have to rent a truck. Or can I stuff it in a mini van I haul 4-6 kids in perpetually? I can't imagine the band saw wieghs much more than my teen after Chinese Buffet.
I am actively shopping for a "Real" bandsaw. I am kinda dead till I get it. I can't make my forms or bender. The one I am looking at is a $1500 3hp Grizzley. I know saving $500 is saving $500. Would buying this used over a new unused Grizzley be wise?
Thoughts?

If you had a chance to look at it first, and check that the wheel bearings are smooth and that the wheels are co-planar or can be gotten there, table trunions are in good shape and the table stays in position when you lean on it, I can't see how it's not a good deal. The motor needs to be switched out, and I wouldn't be interested in the 1.5 HP one that is mentioned. A saw this size should have enough power to utilize it's capacity - you'd want to be able to resaw any hardwood that you're interested in, like the 3 HP on the Grizzley. I use 2 HP on my 14" Delta.

5 hour drive plus a new motor eats up a chunk of the $500. Keep an eye on Craig's list.

Lillian - I have a friend with a pickup who lives 1/2 way between me and Ephrata. Steve's right - I'm trying to stay out of trouble. beehive
Plus, I probably don't have room for it anyway, really - I'd be better off getting a little benchtop job for working on small stuff like bindings and rosettes closer to my workbench. It gets to be a long repetitive walk from the basement to the garage. There is a saw in town here in the neighborhood of 24" which I've been offered at a really cheap price, but it would need a lot of work plus a complete rearrangement of the garage.

It is kinda hard to make a bandsaw that big blend in and go unnoticed isn't it? Not quite the same as slipping in a couple of back/side sets to the pile.
