If you had a chance to look at it first, and check that the wheel bearings are smooth and that the wheels are co-planar or can be gotten there, table trunions are in good shape and the table stays in position when you lean on it, I can't see how it's not a good deal. The motor needs to be switched out, and I wouldn't be interested in the 1.5 HP one that is mentioned. A saw this size should have enough power to utilize it's capacity - you'd want to be able to resaw any hardwood that you're interested in, like the 3 HP on the Grizzley. I use 2 HP on my 14" Delta.
5 hour drive plus a new motor eats up a chunk of the $500. Keep an eye on Craig's list.
Lillian - I have a friend with a pickup who lives 1/2 way between me and Ephrata. Steve's right - I'm trying to stay out of trouble.
Plus, I probably don't have room for it anyway, really - I'd be better off getting a little benchtop job for working on small stuff like bindings and rosettes closer to my workbench. It gets to be a long repetitive walk from the basement to the garage. There is a saw in town here in the neighborhood of 24" which I've been offered at a really cheap price, but it would need a lot of work plus a complete rearrangement of the garage.
