Post subject:  Removing lacquer from Acoustic guitar top

Hello,
Long story, short, Someone took a guitar I built ( 000-28), left it in his car overnight in freezing weather. When I got it back the whole top was cracked, thin spider cracks I guess you call them.
I have to remove the lacquer and re-spray. What is the BEST WAY to remove the lacquer. Strippers worry me, maybe to messy. Should I just sand? I do not want to have to remove the bridge and neck. Will the lacquer Melt-In when I spray around these areas? Thanks.

To do a proper job you will need to remove the neck and bridge .. otherwise the lacquer around these areas will look terrible IMO. You will have trouble flat sanding and buffing.

I have used lac thinner and a razor blade to remove old lac finish. works pretty well.

If all else fails, a good sharp card scraper will take it off quick.

With old hard finish... make sure you are in an area that is easy to clean up....
the old finish likes to fly this way.

Good luck

John
