Post subject: | Finish for Work Surface |
I'm almost completed my mobile work table that I'll be using to build my guitar on. I'm using plywood for the work surface for now. I was thinking of using wipe on poly for a finish on the worktable surface that the parts, guitar wood, etc. will be in contact with. Do you forsee any problems using poly on the work surface? Any reason to leave it bare? Have a better suggestion? Thanks! |

I use 1/4" hardboard with one side white (melamine?) Stick it down with double sided tape and when it gets all beat up, replace it for a brand new top! Cleans up easily too. |

I top most of my surfaces with 1/4" masonite and put 2 coats of brush-on poly on it. Been doing this for about 10 yrs and it's inexpensive and holds up well. |

That's not a bad suggestion. I could use formica or something similar on the top. Would the slickness cause a problem? White would probably lighten things up where I could see better. |

I sanded with 80 grit, followed by General Finishes Outdoor Oil. |

When working on your bench, do you always keep something soft under the guitar back/top? If so, what are your thoughts about using cork on the work surface....possibly glued to the top? |

Carpet. I don't lay anything I'm working on, on anything but carpet ( which I vacuum often). I don't glue anything over carpet, I use whatever and just wipe up the glue drips. |

I use the 1/4" hardboard surfaces as well. When they start to get dinged up, dirty, etc.. just pull them off an put on new ones. I don't bother to put a finish on the (just laziness) I also have some carpet remnants for working on guitar bodies, etc... which as someone suggested above, must be kept clean and free of chips, tools, glue drips, etc... I've put some serious gouges in a nice spruce top not paying enough attention to keeping the carpet clean. In fact my sister teases me that the tops of my benches are cleaner than the carpeted floors. :p |
