Post subject: | Regarding Linings and Bracing |
Has anyone here ever used Alaskan Yellow Cedar for Bracing and or Linings? Or do you know of someone who has with good results? Just curious because I have a bunch of it and I'm considering some for necks and the rest for bracing and lining stock if that's a feasible option. I'd like to thank everyone who will for their input in advance. Gotta head back out to the "man cave" ![]() |

Would work ok for linings but I wuld think it may be too subject to movement for necks, Spanish Cedar a better choice for necks |

I've got a 000-12 fret out there that's a little over a year old with a Yellow Cedar neck. It's a 3 piece neck with 1/4" Mahogany in the middle. It's alot lighter than Spanish Cedar. I'm sure it would make great linings. IMHO it's stiff enough for bracing, but is it a little heavy? |

Now a laminated neck would likely be fine |

I built a classical guitar several years ago using all yellow cedar, including the neck. I put a double acting truss rod in the neck & it has not been a problem. I haven't needed to adjust the rod yet. YC is famous for its stability. (Once it has been properly dried) Yellow cedar is very soft & dents easily, so expect to get "bruises" over time. I would not use it for braces, based on a friend's experience of building his "worst ever sounding guitar". He blamed it wholly on the YC bracing. (Grain 'O' salt) I do use it for kerfed linings, & intend on using it on my next project which will have laminated, solid linings. Careful with the dust... One can quickly become sensitive or allergic to the stuff. |
