I just ordered a set from SM for a guitar I'm trying to make at a cheaper price. I assume they are the newer ones. I'm interested in how they are holding up as well. TJK |

Just an FYI. The Grover vintage 14:1 are still the old style, at least as of late last year. Pat |

The new generation of Santa Cruz tuners are like the new Grovers (i.e. they incorporate the new gear mounting design), but with a different shape to the base plate. They are available direct from Santa Cruz with a nice luthier discount, making them very reasonably priced. You can get them with ivoroid or ebony oval buttons. For me, it's not worth my time to monkey with buttons on the Grovers when I can get them ready to go from Santa Cruz. Plus, I like the SC base plate shape better. http://www.santacruzguitar.com/products ... tml#tuners It isn't obvious from the photo shown on this web page that the gear business is the same as the new Grovers, but it is. |

Todd Stock wrote: It lookss like SCGC went to the 2d Gen 18:1 Grover as the basis for their tuner Or the other way around. I don't know the inside story on the who led the way on the improved design. I do know that the guys at SC led the way on the first generation of these 18:1 machines. Anyway, I'm glad SC redesigned the base plate shape for their own new generation. Tres svelte. I like 'em. The SC tuners come with metal butter bean buttons like the Grovers, but the ebony and ivoroid oval buttons are options (and the tuners come with them already on if you order that option). |

This might not be the best place to ask this, but who makes the Taylor slot head tuner? John |

Todd the two weissenborn copies I finished builting last year have the new style Grover Sta-tite 97 tuners. One set of the tuners are ok but the other is very sloppy in the tuning mechanism. I thought the nut break angle on the guitar maybe was too steep so I lowered the height of the nut to see if that solved the problem. Not so!!! Recently I placed a small order with Stew Mac and complained that I thought one of my sets of Grovers was faulty. They replaced the set no charge. Cheers Alan |

G'day Todd, No more weissenborn copies mate. I will build another in the future it is just the matter of finding a suitable set of blackwood for the build. At present I have two concert size guitars on the work bench. These will be my first go at building an acoustic guitar. One is a Martin 0-18 copy and the other is a concert size using the Scott Antes plan. I received some great advice regard the plan from you and some other good people here on a thread I posted recently. Since the lap slide build I have completed three concert ukulele's for the building experience. They were fun little projects. Cheers Alan |

What do you all think about the Gotoh open back tuners? (look exactly like those pictured) Haven't used the Grovers - or Waverlys ($$) - Comments? |
