This is a meaningless post, but I just bent a test piece of some flame Mahogany that I got from Hibdon (I bend on a pipe and was testing thickness and temp) and as the wood heated up I got the most wonderful cinnamon aroma from it! Sometimes it is little joys like this that make me glad.

Yes, bloodwood smells great when heated. At room temp, nothing comes close to Brazilian...

One of my rooms is full of green Walnut. Wow is it overpowering, but smells great. I was in a Guitar shop, the guy handed me a very pricey Huss and Dalton Walnut. While I like Huss and Daltons alot this one did not have tone (IMO) to match the tag, the guy said "ya I know, smell it" It smelled incredible. |

I like the smell of Walnut and Braz but I love the smell of Spanish Cedar. I use Spanish Cedar linings because of the smell. |

I really like Spanish cedar. It also seems like there are some types of Cherry wood that smell like cherry fruit when you work them. I love the smell of *that* cherry.... Unfortunately, some other cherry wood just smells sour when you work it. Rosewood also has that weird bubble-gummy smell. My wife thought I was crazy when I looked up at her and said "It really does smell like bubble gum!" Oak is one of those woods I don't particularly care for. Catalpa also has a rather *Unique* smell that is on my "Dammit, keep that stuff outside" list.... Thanks John |

I'll third that bloodwood smells great! I find after a while you get to like most wood smells. Except I cannot stand ebony. Matt |

Brazilian-flowerly Indian-horsey Imbuia-wonderful ,spicey Port Orford cedar-rich,spice Alaskan yellow -sweet Spanish cedar-nice Monterey cypress-sweet Walnut-wonderful Coco Bolo-look out ! Mahogany-nice Maple (some) sweet Red Cedar-nice That's what my nose tells me Mike |

I really like Padauk, and think it should be added to tha list of woods w/ fragrance. Now since rank odors have been brought up, let me voice a caution about Queensland Walnut (Australia). Graham McDonald sent me a set, and while it is beautiful to behold, and has a pleasing tap, I'm thinking of the need to seal the inside of the instrument as well as the outside. Graham assures me the odor dissipates over time, but right now it smells like a cow lot. But it is pretty.... That said, David I totally agree that these little things add up as some of the more pleasurable experiences in the craft. Steve |

We are all noting these wonderfull smelling woods.... How 'bout ebony ![[xx(]](./images/smilies/smiley11.gif "Dead") I hate the smell of ebony. Sure is classy looking though.

Ebony is the one wood that sends my nose into fits! I always remember that just as I'm finished sanding that one little piece. Yeah, Brazilian is the one that smells the best of all, not that I get to smell it that often. I keep a bridge from an old guitar, and just run it by the disk sander from time to time, to remind me what the upper crust of builders are smelling.

What about the Fylde 'Single Malt' instruments? They're made from old oak whisky casks and oregon pine washback vessels from the Talisker distillery. (just had to take a look at the website to remind myself where the wood came from came from). I was working there when Roger Bucknall first started making them about 8 years ago. The smell of whiskey casks going through the sander was extraordinary. The complete guitars retain the whisky smell, with a slight tinge of sherry - I think the washback vessels had been bought by Talisker from a Spanish sherry maker. Bri |

I like the smell of some of my local woods, my favourite is probably juniper. I also enjoy making large objects from pine, the scent will linger in the shop for days. Birch is nice too, it reminds me of my grandfather's woodcarving shop. That's a funny thing about smells, they can really bring old memories alive, eh? |

I second the padauk -- I came across a container with padauk shavings from a piece I'd turned several years ago, when we were starting up a batch of compost and needed some brown material, though in this case it was bright red. It smelled as sweet as candy. Another sweet smelling wood is granadillo -- sweet and spicy. Ken |

I like the smell of Bubinga, it has a sweet smell. Ovangkol looks wonderful, but it smells terrible! |

Fir has a very nice, "clean" smell that I always enjoy. WRC smells interesting, but I prefer Eastern White. Elm smells earthy. Pine smells nice and sweet. And Red Oak smells like you just stepped in dog poo. I'll have to wait, maybe a long time, to smell some of the other woods mentioned! |

Zebrawood & Ebony stink!!! Especially when bending!! Brazilian smells the best !! I do like the spiceywoods -cypress ,Imbuia,some cedars. And a single malt !!!! Mike |
