Can someone tell me the proper thickness of a tail block to later accept an end pin plug? I guess that would be total thickness with side , or even the range of thickness required for an end pin plug , thanks jody

I use 5/8" Baltic birch for my tail blocks. It's light and won't split if the guitar is dropped on the tail or if the plug is in the jack and gets dropped.

It's very common to use BB for tail blocks, especially if the guitar is to have a pick up with plug in the tail.

Thanks Rod, would 3/4 work ? I just happen to have a 1/2 sheet of 3/4 " birch plywood. Thanks Jody

Yup! Just make sure the plug has enough thread to accommodate the 3/4" ply plus the side thickness. My guess though is that is should be fine, just double check.

3/4" works with any endpin/pre amps I've ever seen. I laminate my own end blocks from scrap spruce. (I'm too cheap to buy plywood laughing6-hehe )

I use 1/2 inch birch ply .. plenty strong, and cheaper too.

A buddy of mine is a cabinet maker and he keeps all the off cuts of 5/8" BB that they normally toss in the dumpster. He just gave me a box of pieces which will render me about 75 tail blocks, or lots of small parts for jigs etc...

There's always a way to get things less expensive ;)

I use Corian I get from a local countertop shop...(just kidding! )...1/2" BB Ply is my standard whether an endpin jack is planned or not...
