Post subject:  Cocobolo
Lookey what I got for the cost of shipping. I couldn't believe it when I opened the boxes. This was from a woodworking shop that said he had some Coco off cuts that he would be willing to give away. I figured it would all be pretty small. Then he said he had a few pieces that were as long as 40", and could he cut them up for a smaller package. I asked him to leave them at length, that I might be able to get some binding out of them. I had no idea. The pictures are from my phone, so not too good. This is nice stuff. Most all of it quartered pretty well.

This is much more than I expected. Probably some sides in those long pieces.

It can be, depending on each individual's sensitivity to the oils and dust.

Thanks Waddy. I have a piece of coco I'm thinking of using for a bridge. I hate wearing the respirator, but I guess I will - especially after reading about John Mayes. John, thanks for sharing your experience.

Great score there!!

FWIW, I used cocobolo for a while with no problems then one day, BLAM!!!, it hit me. Severe, and I mean severe sinus problems and breathing problems. Be very careful and I would recommend the respirator. Its very porous too and some pieces tend to be very oily. I'm sure all this has been covered before. Good find though.

It's a sensitizer - once it gets you, I don't think the problem ever goes away. I know one research chemist who had to move into a totally different area of lab work after a run in with a sensitizer that she had based her whole career on.

Waddy - as one who uses Coco for my standard binding on EIR guitars, I'm jealous!

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy. As I look at this, I might actually get a couple of 4 piece backs and some sides out of two of the pieces. They are nearly 1" thick by 6" wide at the widest point, and both cut from the same log, and nearly perfectly quartered.
