Post subject:  Coco/Adi Dreadnought Finished

We got a few guitars finished in the last week.

This one is a Cocobolo/Adi Dreadnought which will be used for DADGAD playing.

All of the materials came from the Zootman apart from the Queensland Maple neck.

The fingerboard and Bridge are Coco with Ebony bindings.

It's bright and crisp in the top end which is what we want. The customer this was built for has had a strum of it over the last few days and he's very happy.

I love the cocobolo, too, just so wonderful to see and to work, as well. I am curious, did you find the bridge a little on the heavy side? I have a batch of cocobolo sawn up for bridges, and hope they are usable.

Nice. I'm with Steve. What's the finish? Is it that Das Boot stuff you guys use down there? Tell us more.

Thanks everyone.

Yes it is a nice set of Coco. I bought it when I was in the States last year form Bob Cefalu. It's much easier being in the warehouse and being able to fondle all of this wood as opposed to choosing sets from the internet. :D

Steve and Terence - the finish is a pre-catalysed Laquer produced by a local company, Mirotone. The stuff we use is called Mirocat 3220 100% gloss.

It looks like it's been dipped in the stuff but it's 10 coats and the nitro has been thinned 50/50 with thinners. We know it goes on thin because we sand through it with monotonous regularity.

We finished about 6 instruments last week for a show here and being under the pump we sprayed a couple of them one day and finish sanded and buffed them the next. They still came up to an acceptable level of gloss. This one was only left a week before buffing so it hardens fairly quickly.

Super nice Bob! [:Y:] Does that pre-cat lacquer melt into the underlying coats like regular nitro?

Bob,

I agree with ALL the comments. Craig got so excited, he said it 3 times!

When was the last homely guitar you built, Bob? 8-) You seem to produce guitar after guitar that exude class and a very high level of workmanship.

What a beauty!

Erik

It burns in very nicely. We've done some repairs with it and it is invisible. Well, up until a year later it's invisible. How it is long term remains to be seen. I'll report back in 10 years. :D

Yes, Bob, I'll add my praises to all the rest. Nice instrument all the way around, and superb wood choice, too. But, man...that finish execution has everyone drooling--and with darned good reason, too! That is just outstanding!

Bob,
Dr***n**ts aren't my favorite size guitar, but this one is fabulous [:Y:] [:Y:] [clap] [clap]

I'm with in others in awe of the finish. I've been playing with french polish on my last 3 guitars,
but I'm going back to pre-cat lacquer. Easier to apply, in my opinion, harder, and so, so
beautiful when done like this one...
