Post subject: | Advice needed to repair a dent on a truoil neck |
Hi Everyone. I've searched the archives for an answer to this, but I couldn't find anything tru-oil specific. I was doing some final fitting of the neck last night, when I accidently bumped it on the edge of my workbench on the underside just south of the nut. It's just a small dent, but I really want to repair it, especially cause it's right in 'first position' so it'll be felt all the time (unless you're some fancy player who uses all the neck ![]() I've read about using CA to fill dings but I didn't want to go ahead with that b/c I've only seen that referred to as a lacquer repair. I don't think I should try to fill it with tru-oil, though. Should I just sand the dent out and refinish the area (it is quite small and really wouldn't affect the shape of the neck in any real way), or is there a way to fill it with something, and maybe put a thin coating of tru oil over, and buff it out in a few days' time? I'd really appreciate some direction here from someone familiar with repairing oil varnish finishes. Thanks. |

If it's not a gouge you should try to steam out the dent without burning the finish. CA looks invisible under varnish but you'll need a couple of coats over it. |

I recently used a couple of layers of medium CA to fill a dent on a mahogany neck finished in tru oil over zpoxy. I can't attest to the long-term effects, but right now the repair is basically invisible. I leveled the CA with a razor blade and blended with 320 and 400 sandpaper followed by something like 5 coats of tru oil. It's not as hard or wear resistant as lacquer, but at least tru oil a very easy finish to repair. |

Thanks, Laurent and Bob. I'll try the steam thing first, then the CA/recoat if that doesn't work. |
