The neck that I have is a thin 1 3/4" . I would like to make my fingerboard 1 7/8". Is there any problem with adding wood binding to the fingerboard and shaping it into the neck? Or is there a better way to increase the width of the neck? Rich |

If I were you, I'd cut it into two sticks and glue them with a middle strip. |

Is this on a finished neck or on a neck you are constructing (maybe you got the neck from a supplier)? |

That's not going to work. The better way is to get or make a new neck. |

Is this the fretboard or the neck+fretboard? if it's just fretboard you can add binding to add additional width but if it's the neck+fretboard (or just the neck) then it will be less work to just make a new neck than cutting existing neck in half and laminating something in between... it's difficult to square up a cut like that. |

Thanks for the replies. The neck is from a supplier and it is almost 1 3/4 about 1/32 shy. The fingerboard is 1 3/4. Can binding be added to the board after it is trimmed and then shape the lower edge of the binding into the neck to result in a 1 7/8 neck? Rich |

Not sure about your situation. Is the board currently square edged, so that if it is shaved after installed to meet the radius of the neck, will it actually be the correct size? |

You can do whatever you want as long as it doesn't affect playability but it may look weird. This is one of the biggest reason why I do not buy necks from suppliers anymore because something doesn't always fit, and often it's more work than making a neck from scratch than making things fit. I have gotten Martin neck and then I wanted to use the Martin U-channel style rod which does not fit because the Martin rod fits in a 1/2" channel (actually slightly less than 1/2" but a route for 1/2" makes a good loose fit that allows me to epoxy the rod in for perfect fit) and while a Stewmac hot-rod rod fits it requires a deeper channel than the ones on a Martin neck (remember this is a neck you get from Ebay...) and I get nervous about truss rods requiring a deep set because this allows the possibility of the truss rod breaking through the neck itself. |

Yes you can do it , but that doesn't mean you can do it and it would be a success. This subject comes up from time to time on other forums as well. Here is what you can do. If you taper your fretboard a bit you can squeak the fretboard a little by tapering it but realistically you can't get more than a 1/16th. john hall |

Thanks John, I should have written that the neck shape is a V . So it seemed feasible to be able to get a little more out of it |
