I'm always excited to receive a new tool and this time it's a 1/4" Blue Spruce dovetail chisel with African Blackwood handle. This is my second BS chisel with the first one being a 1/2", long paring chisel.

Recently I had the opportunity to spend some time with the 1/2" chisel and liked it so very much that I am now going to start purchasing more BS stuff. My only regret is that I forgot to add their awl to my order... [headinwall] but I'll try to do that next time.

This chisel is slated for things like removing the excess around the neck tenon when fitting a neck, cutting the X-brace notch, and much more.

Anyway these chisels are very well balanced for what I like in a chisel and they come from BS very sharp and only need a bit of honing to get that razor edge. The A2 steel seems to stay sharp fairly long too. Also, both of my dealings now with BS have exceeded expectations with the chisels delivered in roughly 1/2 the stated wait time.

Those are beautiful Hesh.
One thing I will never regret is the three "cherries" paring chisels I got early on. Hold an edge for weeks.

Few questions,
-Did you get the long handle or standard? How do they feel?
-Did you order direct and how long did it take?
-Are you looking at the small or large Awl they have?

Thanks guys.

David (Skyhigh) both times that I ordered from BS they indicated about a 4 week lead time and both times I had my stuff in 2 weeks or slightly less.

Mine have the standard sized handles and they feel great to me, very comfortable. When I first saw the handles in person I was a bit concerned that they are super smooth and it made me wonder if these might be hard to hang onto. But once I used the longer chisel that was not the case. The fit for my hands is perfect. And yes I ordered direct.

Awl wise they both look great but I think that I want the smaller one, I also like the handle shape on the smaller one better.

I also have the 1/2" paring (long handle, curly maple) and 1/4" Dovetail. I love them both. I have a Lie Nielsen 1/2" as well, and equally like that.

Glad to hear you're supporting one of our local businesses.
Also here in the Portland area are Bridge City Toolworks (who make gorgeous layout tools), Leatherman, & Gerber Legendary Blades to name a few off the top.

very nice tools those BS...
Im thinking about investing in some of thier dovetail chisels... $260 for a set of 4 I believe - ah well you get what you pay for!

I have two Lie Nielsen saws on route from Woodcraft myself ... right now.
Rob Cosman isnt supplying Canada as a LN distributor any longer :( so I had to make an order from WC...
Anyhow one open handle 12" dovetail and a 12" 13pt crosscut tenon...
They cost a mint when all was said and done - but hey you get what you pay for

I posted the same question on the other chisel thread. Can someone with BS long paring chisel tell me if there is significant difference between 1/2" versus 3/4" when it comes to carving braces.

acquisitions will be some really good chisels like those. I've used
my Marples long enough.

I dont own BS paring chisels but have a fleet of English chisels which get used alot in my shop. When carving braces I use the 3/4" more than the 1/2". With the wider chisel I can but a bit of sideways slicing action into the paring technique....personal taste I guess but it works for me.

I have a BS 1/2" paring chisel and a 3/4" Old Buck Bros Paring chisel. I like them both. The 3/4" has a "heft" to it that I really like, and the 1/2" has a "finesse" that I really like.
