What saddle width are you using. I've been using 1/8" and I'm thinking about maybe using a 3/16" for this pinnless I'm working on. |

Chris, I made a bridge withe a 3/16" saddle channel and had trouble finding a blank wide enough for it, so now i'm having to make my own out of deer feet bone.I like 1/8" the best. |

1/8...and like you...considering a 3/16. I bought a bunch of large blanks for 2 bucks a piece so I could play with the width. I don't see where the additional width harms anything....plus it gives a newbie like me the extra surface width for intonation purposes. |

7/64 (finished). All that is needed. |

Ervin Somogyi likes 3/16" or wider saddles ("Principles of Guitar Dynamics and Design",American Lutherie, #36), and he's got a very good reputation as a luthier, so I've ordered wider saddle blanks for my next 2 or 3 builds. I think it's worth investigating. |

I have used 3/32 up to now and was wondering what the advantage of a thicker saddle would be other than allowing more adjustment space for intonation. Fred |

I use 3/16" & really like the wiggle room it allows for compensation. Lots of suppliers have wider blanks these days. When I finally make the bridge placement jig I have in my head, I may start using 1/8", but I still like the look of a wider saddle. |

I've always used 1/8th because..... well I don't know why. I just re-topped an old friend of mine that I never liked the sound of and while routing the bridge screwed up the slot a bit. I hate to waste a good piece of ebony so I routed it wider and dropped a 7/32 in there. I like the way it looks on this guitar and I would be hard pressed to claim I notice any thing in the tone. And the apex of the saddle is right down the middle and the intonation is just as good as my 1/8th saddles. |
