Time to show off my number 3. I built it in November then played it in for a while, and finally FP last week.

The top is Euro spruce from Austria, Brazilian RW bridge, cedro neck, rosette by Dmitry Zhevlakov, Rubner tuners (solid "natural" brass and ebony buttons), Indian rosewood B&S. Size, shape and bracing similar to the work of Torres in the 1880's, and about 5-6 very thin sessions of amber shellac, pores (not perfectly) filled with pumice. I didn't do any buffing yet, I am guessing it might be better if I let it harden a little for a month or so.

Sound is pretty good, I have lend it to a professional guitarist who liked it, he will use it in concerts so maybe there will be more people asking me to build for them.

I am sorry of the pics are too big, too many and too slow to load... :oops: Hopefully in a couple days I will post some sound samples too.

Technical question: It looks to me like your saddle is higher on the bass side than the treble. Is this true? If so, do you prefer this means of getting higher action on the bass side over the approach of shaving down the fretboard on the bass side and trying to keep equal string height over the top at the bridge? Any comments on that from players?

Thanks everyone for the nice comments! I guess the photos make it nicer than it is - the gear used (by a friend) costs a fortune...


Jim, a taller bass saddle is how I got used to setup. I might plane the bass side of the FB a little more (did it on my previous 2 builds), but not a whole lot, I prefer the look of even thicknessed FBs. Also the player requested extra high action for the bass, he has a heavy attack, so the saddle is 1mm taller there than what I would usually do. So the low E action came in at a bit over 4mm, and 3mm, maybe less for the treble.

The purflings are made from LMI veneer sheets: curly maple, light color Indian rw and ebonized maple.

Alex, superb job you've done on this one, I'm looking forward to hearing it, for only your third guitar that is a truly wonderful job.

I've got a set of the exact same Rubners for a cypress guitar I have half made (got delayed a bit due to my accident) they are a very good alternative tuner for us on this side of the pond. And I like the fact they are made by a small family business.

I love the bindings and end wedge matching the back and sides. It just looks simple and classy. Very nice.
