OK gang, I mentioned a while back that I was going to build an all mahogany guitar out of a church pew. I've cut up the wood, lammed a 3 piece neck, bent the sides and joined the top & back. now I freely admit that I've never played a hog top. I don't ever remember even being in the same room as one. I've had a look around google but there are very few pics of what looks good as a rosette on a hog top. ![]() Maple? Rosewood? Any suggestions? |

What do you plan to bind with? If a contrasting wood then a purfling/wood ring/purfling rosette of the same wood as the binding works well Abalone is stunning on redish woods, Lots of things you can do. |

Same as binding and/or FB and or bridge. That's what I'd do. Something darker would look really classy in my opinion. |

OK, rosewood to match the binding, fretboard & bridge then..... still to purfle this, but under way....... ![]() |

Should look great, Martin. Are you tempted to put a strip of shell in the center? I think abalone would really make that pop. |

I'm on my first build and it's an all mahogany as well. I'm usually more of a lurker than a poster, but I've attached a photo of a dry run of a simple BWB purfling/abalone/purfling rosette on my hog top.http://s727.photobucket.com/albums/ww274/davo8411/?action=tageditmany |

Do you hate the look of abalone or working with it? If you hate working with it, check out the flexab/zipflex stuff that Kevin Ryan makes. |
