Post subject:  Kunz Plane a bit Sticky..

Bit of a strange question but....
The green Kunz palm plane I received recently feels a bit sticky, kind of like when you pull the price tag off of something. Just the body, not the blade. I know there are some cleaning agents that remove this stuff but I don't know if they will do any future damage to the plane, and more importantly the wood that the plane comes in contact with! Any suggestions? I'm thinking of spraying it with WD-40 and letting it sit for 10 minutes or so. Thanks.

John, that sticky stuff is oil, to prevent rusting during shipping, etc. Wipe it off with an appropriate solvent. Afterwards, use wax or camilla oil or something to keep the plane in good shape like you do with all of your metal body planes.

Clean it off with acetone or mineral spirits and then acetone. My usual cleaning order for stuff now is Spray Nine (industrial cleaner), blow off with air, Spray 9 again, blow off with air, then acetone. You probably don't need the acetone, even, but it makes sure that the surface is bone dry and super clean afterward (it cleans off the water!)
