Here's a pic of a guitar my brother built. Brazilian back/sides, with curly Ash bindings and rosette. I think it is rather striking.

Has anyone used, or know of use of, ash for binding? It is very hard, has very straight grain, and can be easily bent with steam (think toboggans, snowshoes). And it is so white, I would think as a wooden binding it might look almost as striking as white ivoroid. Best, David |

I don't see any problem with useing it.It's a great tone wood and is durable.And it does bend good too.I will be useing it on a walnut dread next year.If you can find some with nice curl ,that would also lookgreat as well. |

Mark: When you say ash is a great tonewood - have you seen it used for backs and sides? I'm in Maine and we have some good ash here, but I have not seen it quartersawn. A lot of it goes into my woodstove! thanks for your reply, David |

Yes, I have used it for bindings and for kerfed linings with excellent results. |

Thanks to you all for replies and the photos of beautiful guitars! I am new to this forum - I am still laboring to finish a Martin kit guitar I started 4 (maybe more) years ago and hit a wall on - anyway, lately I have started in on it again and am making good progress! And already planning the next one. This looks like a really good place for information and advice. Thanks again, David |
