I have to much things going on right now guitars, drumsander etc etc.. so I have no time to build a binding jig.
I spoke to John Hall and his binding jig does not fit a Borch Colt, (But european version, GKF600 ). So I was just wondering if any good jigbuilder in here had the time and heart to build me one, so I can bind my guitars, :D :D :? . it can be precut parts or fully working, Anything that would work with my router. "IF", then please Pm me what you want to build it.

I was brought up with a mother that was "is" always saying , "you can always ask" :lol:

Ummm...

I wish I'd have thought of that anytime in the last two and a half years of trying to find time to build a few guitars between building the myriad of jigs I've built ... in order to build guitars. That would've saved me alot of time...

lars, hand cutting the binding channels isnt a bad idea, but thats coming from a guy with a williams binding machine.

what would it take to modify johns binding machine to fit your colt?

also, i will say that of all the jigs ive built, the williams binding machine was one of the easiest and quickest. you definitely need a table saw though, so im not sure where that leaves you. the instructions are on don williams site and you can find materials at a local hardware store.

dont get ahead of yourself. i started my first and current build when my daughter was born. she just turned one in january, so its been some time. i spent years before that dreaming and coming up with tools and what not. take your time and i think you can bust out a binding jig in no time. maybe with some hard work i will finish my first guitar before my daughter turns two!

good luck and if you really dont want to or dont have the time to build a binding mahine i hope you find someone kind enough to build one for you! just not me!

Hi Lars,

I just finished a jig like the one LMI sells. I am also overloaded with projects but just stopped for a week and a half to build it. Go for it, you'll be glad you did.

I have the Bosch Colt and the Stew Mac binding kit. I found out I have to drill extra holes in the SM routing base. So my example is a simple one. I don't know much about your particular jig. Good luck!

It is probably not a big deal to modify the machine to fit a colt. Modifying or making tools is 1/3 of lutherie!

So glad to hear I'm not the only one suffering from jig and template-itis. I have barely been able to fit in bits and pieces of a first guitar inbetween the jigmaking also. I feel like I have been squeezed into patience with the process. One thing I do have to say is that I'm really looking forward to the second guitar. I also realize how much I am enjoying building all of the jigs etc....

Eventually the jigs stop, BUT... it certainly isn't after the first (unless you're really keen) or the second (getting closer but...) or the third....

It honestly seems like there are always new and better ways of doing something for the first jig you built is inferior but "did the job" and you want to upgrade it.

Building jigs is just part of building guitars. It is my NOT SO HUMBLE belief that building your jigs, tools, molds etc... helps one understand the process' of building a guitar better. When you have to make yourself think through the process in which you want to perform, you get a much better idea of how that process can (and does) effect other aspects which build on top of that previous process.

Mind you, If you really don't want to build jigs (I can appreciate that most want to build guitars, not jigs to build guitars) than yes, there are a few great suppliers of jigs in which you can buy from.

So Lars, are you looking for the W/F style binding jig or the Ribbeke style? I believe John Hall sells both.

I'm asking so that I (and everyone else) knows exactly what you are asking for.

Well just for the record. Right now I am building a drumsander, and I have build 1 rosette cutting jig, and 1 inlay cutting jig, at the same time I am workin on 2 guitars, "not many, but, I´ve only been in this game for a few months !" ! Its lots of fun to build these jigs, it truly am. although, I am right at the point where the bindings are to be cut, and the space I have to workt in is small, and now the drum-sander, that is 24"+ wide is in the way of building more jigs [headinwall] :D :D so this is the reason, I was askin for some help.

PS- I just got a PM, so Hopefully the question is answered bliss .

I just glued the feed table up tonight, took a lot of glue !!!!!! . I will post some shots as Its dont.

Building jigs seems to be my occupation the last years or two... thickness sander, neck routing jig, binding jig, side bending jig/machine, bending forms, body molds, templates templates, templates, thickness calipers, gobar deck, workboards, workbench, kerfed lining cutting jig, angle grinding jig for chisels, headstock thicknessing jig, shooting board, plate joining jig, candling board, plus Im making my own planes.... and a few various tools such as mallets and such,,, gaah
I know Im forgetting some things....
now Im working on a few more - motorized dish sanding station, and fretboard radius jig...
Its been out of financial necessity more than anything else,,, so no alternatives - had I had alternatives I definitely would have taken them in at least some of the cases!
but a couple guitars are finally taking shape.... and all this work will ensure that future guitars will go fatser I suppose its all worth it.

Lars,

I am surprised John did not tell you this. The one part on the jig that is "custom" is the base for your router. it can be made out of aluminum or high density plastic. I did build my own jig... but the plans call out a base for a router I do not have (I have the colt). Anybody can make a new base. No big deal. Have john ship it without the base cut for anything.
