When trying to level the back of a headstock, i kinda got a bit over enthusiastic  its a classical, and now the tuners over hang the back a bit (see photo) oh well, at least the back of the head is flat now lol so should i veneer the back of the head? what would you do? thanks jonny p.s. sorry for the bad photos, i had to use a camera phone |

That's more than a bit  I would laminate it to make up the difference for sure.It might just turn out looking better that way anyway.I have sometimes made an instrument better from a mistake before like that.

Your guitar won't destruct as a result of this, but it will bug the hell out of you forever! If it bothered you enough to take photos of it and post it, it bothers you enough that you'll have to deal with it. A veneer plate on the back of the headstock is the only save. You can use the same wood as the neck is made of, or match the faceplate. Its pretty easy to do. Many builders do this on purpose. Do it, never tell anyone that it is a "save" (except someone who's been there-done that), and never, ever, apologize for it. |

Do it, never tell anyone that it is a "save" (except someone who's been there-done that), and never, ever, apologize for it. lol, that bought a smile to my face. the faceplate is a cut of from the maple back, however, it not the right size, theres about a 3mm gap (thats probs an exaduration) between it and the back of the nut when i place the nut at the 0 fret position. so i think ill have get rid of that and put a new one on. (the maple clashed with the rosewood fingerboard anyway  )

Another possibility might be to dowel and redrill the tuner holes to center the plates better. I would probably just let it go, and be more careful on the next one. There's always a next one. |

All of these answers are true and valid, but you asked us what we would do, so I would glue on a back plate. Of all the ideas suggested, it's the simplest thing you can do, other than leaving it just as it is. I think Douglas is right--it's bugging you, so you need to fix it. When you're finished, no one will ever know, except you and Douglas and Clay and J. and me and...... But we're not talking. Patrick |
