This is the biggest rip off I have yet seen on ebay, a set of welder tip cleaners and a set of feeler gauges and he calls it a nut file system for novice luthiers.

Check this out for a laugh

His claims seem accruate (not pro quality) I've never seen these files, nor would I buy or use them. But, gotta give the guy a break, he's probably making more money than most luthiers! beehive

I was going to use this system, but Lowes did not have any welder tip things. They run like .70 cents a piece. I've heard of people using them with a small hacksaw blade-holder. So for $6.00 you have a beginner set of nutfiles. Where do you get them wholsale?

Someone should start a nutfiles rental...

The silliness people will go through, to keep from getting the right tool, amazes me.

I used one of these when I built my Uke. I got it from one of the Uke suppliers. I think I paid somewhere around $4 to $7 for it and just added it on to an existing order. I started the slot with a razor saw and finished it off with one of these files. It worked, but I'll probably pick up a set of proper files the next time. I wouldn't pay what the ebay seller is asking for it.

I bought a set of welding tip cleaners from Osh that was just a few dollars on sale. There have been discussions of their successful use on other forums. My plan is to string up 3 ukuleles and a guitar this next month so I might try using them to see if they work OK. What I have been using is a small file set I used to use when I raced radio controlled cars. They are not that great but work with a little care. The welding tip cleaner advice is posted on the web site for the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii under their Luthier section.

I feel bad for this guy getting strung up. You can find the exact same ratio of 'cost at supplier' to 'cost at other supplier' in many of the companies supplying luthiers (ie: I can find tools in their catalogs that I can buy, retail, at 1/4 the price from other suppliers).

He isn't lying or misrepresenting what he's selling (it does what he says it does as well as he says it does) and noone is coerced in any way to buy it. We have no right to determine how much the time of finding, buying, packing, and shipping the items is worth to the seller. Maybe he drives across town to get them and it takes him half an hour at the store plus gas plus a trip to the post office.

I agree he is doing nothing illegal, but it is not fair to sucker in the unaware or new potential guitar builder. Not that the tip cleaners will not work but they can be had at almost any hardware store for a fraction of that price. That is the trouble with ebay, you need to watch what you buy and what you pay for it. I also get very upset with ebay sellers that greatly inflate their shipping price from USA to Canada.
