How would you prepare a coco bridge for glue -up? Naptha&scrape?

Disclaimer: I have never glued a coco bridge before.....

Mark my friend from what I have read here I would go with a good scrape. In previous threads I got the impression that using solvents like Naptha might actually bring more oil to the gluing surface.

I've heard the same thing about naptha bringing the oils up.I had someone tell me to use acetone on rosewood boards once. But never tried it.

Mark Geiger's recommendation for all gluing of cocobolo was: wipe with naptha, glue as soon as the naptha flashes. That's for gluing with titebond.

I glued a cocobolo bridge to redwood using that method. I really wiped thoroughly with the naptha until I got rid of any residual color bleeding. I also gave the surface a light scraping prior to wiping with naptha. It seems to have worked (knock wood).

I've used many cocobolo bridges and a fresh surface works fine for me. Never used a solvent.

Kent,

With your experience, can you characterize the difference in sound between a cocobolo bridge and a IRW or Ebony one? I am contemplating a cocobolo bridge on an OM that is at Joe White's for finishing and would like to know.

It's pretty low damping and heavy is what I can say objectively. Beyond that, it really depends on so many other things that I'm reluctant to make broad generalizations. As far as my guitars go, I build pretty light tops and I find that they sound best with relatively heavier bridges. More disciplined, more focused, sometimes less string noise. But that's just me.

One way to get an idea about mass on your own guitars is to stick some washers or coins on your EIR bridge with putty or double stick tape.

I've done fine with an acetone wipe on cocobolo. More recently I've just been using a fresh surface, sanded or scraped within 5 minutes of gluing; no problems with adhesion.
