Post subject:  IN need of a set of MACASSAR

Hi Folks,

I bought this set of Macassar a few years back from Allied. I am now in desperate need of another just like it or as close as possible. I know Todd had a few of these up. I wish I had grabbed them all!

Lance, check with Eben Atwater over at LuthierCom. He had some nice sets posted for sale. I do not know what he has that he did not post. Some of it was pretty nice looking stuff.

Check with OWW. I got the following set from them over a year ago. I too wish I had grabbed a few. I havent seen anything like it since. This ones not for sale. You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

I'm young (for this crowd) and hopefully have a long time and many guitars to build before that. This one along with a few other ridiculous sets are going to wait until I'm worthy of them. It still makes me tingly when I look at it in real life. I have many other lesser sets waiting in the queue first. That’s the beauty and downfall of WAS. Big zoot pile. It’s an investment...no really, and investment...really... [uncle]

I got a nice set from Vikwood a while back. He said he had the largest stash of Madagascar in the country. I don't know if he has a special stash of anything as nice as what you have there but it's worth a try.

You're absolutely right! I must have been reading through too fast. Thanks for the correction.

Vikwood has Madagascar ebony, not Maccassar ebony. Very different.

Having said that, Vikwood had killer prices on fretboards, and they were quite black.

Filippo

" Killer prices" Hmmmmm I must be missing something.

Lance, have you checked with Todd? On his site he says he has sets in the kiln for the next Weekly Specials page.

Thanks folks!
Turns out that its not macassar but rather Mun Ebony. I think I have a good chance of scoring as set...

I thought that was too figured for the sets of Macassar I've seen. Mun makes more sense.

Try Acoustic Woods Ltd. Their site has been down for a long time, but they had a whole lot of this stuff a while back. I got the following set a few years ago. This was the best of what they were calling 4A. I also got a 3A that looks a lot different. They had a bunch of 5A that was real expensive, but even better than this. This stuff is really heavy.

I think these are Malaysian Blackwood.

I've always questioned that as well. That set sure looks more like like Malaysian Blackwood than Mac Eb. I can see getting a few logs mixed up. Even if it is Blackwood, its still a killer set.

The Mun Ebony sets I'm confidant about. Everything I've see on Mun looks just like what I have.
