Post subject:  Need some sides for practice bending
Kyle and I just received our new side bending machine from John Hall.

We would like to do some test bends before we try our luck with some flame hog we recently received from Hibdon.

We're looking for some inexpensive sides that we could use for a couple practice runs.

Anyone out there have anything they could part with to get us on our way?

Check with Shane at High Mountain Tonewoods. He posted that he had some off quality, mis matched sides that he was selling for a pretty good price. I bought a few. Don't know what he has left. Look in the "Wanting to make some 5 piece necks" thread.

when i first built my bending jig, i ordered a set of side bending practice wood from stewmac.

$12.58 for a set. ...not big enough to build a guitar with, but enough to test your tightest curves.

If you have a 14" or larger bandsaw and a wagner safety planer (or drum sander) you could make your own. Just find some decent mahogany or walnut at a local hardwood supplier - not cheap but still quite a bit less than buying practice sides. There is also the side benefit that you can improve your resaw chops. This is what I did and after a successful bend I went ahead and resawed the back and sides for my first build. Of course if you don't have the equipment then ordering practice sides is probably the way to go.

I only have a 12" band saw - and don't think I'm ready to tackle resawing with it.

A very timely topic! I am looking to do the same. I have the ability to resaw and have a fair amount of flat sawn maple. I haven't looked at the pieces I got from Jason for awhile. My guess is the sides are quartersawn. Will my flat sawn maple bend similarly to the figured maple I got from Jason?

Don't let that stop you. I only have a 10" bandsaw, and I resawed some Poplar for practice bending. Worked fine. Still had to plane them to thickness, but I needed practice at that too.

Get a good resaw blade for your saw. It should have enough hmpfh to resaw a 4" board.

Practice wood is a great idea, I got 10 EIR orphan sides from a Ebay seller in BC Canada and that is the best money I have spent on guitar stuff. I have cut up the nicest looking pc. for peg head overlays and have bent two to practice pipe bending a cutaway last year, and made a couple cutaway practice sides with my home built bender and heat blanket slats set from John Hall. The seller shows up on ebay quite often with orphan sides for sale, the last couple of times were Mahogany.

Hey Paul,

Did you find some practice sides yet? If not let me know. I have some black walnut that is useful only for practicing. It has small knots that degraded as the tree grew. They have been stabilized with CA and will work well for what you will be doing. I will sell them very reasonably.

I agree that this is a good idea. I did the same thing. I got some rejects sides during one of our swap meets. re-sawing a 4" wide piece of HOG or Oak from HD, Lowes or Menards would be my suggestion. Would be less expensive that getting orphan sides shipped from one of our trusty sponsors. Plus it will give you a try at re-sawing...

Thanks everyone - I was able to get some practice sides from Andrew at Hibdon for a very nice price.

Now I just need to find the time to practice!

Hello All,
I'm a new guy here.
Lowes has 1/4" x 6" x 4' Red Oak that planes down really nice and works good for bending.
One thing though, after bending my sides had ugly dark spots, maybe I should have used distilled water instead of Red River water.
