I am about to bind a guitar with tortoise celluloid nitrate. I searched the archives and found a few threads on it. I am using .070 thick for the body binding, heel cap and head veneer. Some of the info I found said to install a white wood purfling behind it to make it stand out more-is this the general consensus? If you do use a pufling behind it,what type ofglue do you use? The body and neck are Honduran mahogany. Thanks, Brad |

The tortise shell is kind of transparent so you will slightly see whatever is behind it. If you have rosewood sides and a spruce top, this two-tone effect for the top binding may look a little weird. On my last guitar, I installed a .010" layer of white plastic behind the tortise shell and it really made it pop. If you don't do this, it will look considerably more muted. |

I use white celluloid from StewMac. It glues better than ABS. Weld On is somewhat stronger than Duco. CA works very well. But you can even use a PVA glue if you first wipe with acetone, which seems to open up the surface for adhesion to a glue that is intended for porous surfaces.. |

I only ever used it on FBs .... I put maple veneer behind it. |

Thanks for all the replies. I am thinking of using maple or holly behind it. So would the weldon glue work for the wood to wood joint as well as the wood to tortoise joint? |

CA works the best IMHO, it will also make the joints invisible. |
