OK back story.....

A bloke from my church completes his theology degree this year and will be ordained as an anglican priest and leave us to pastures new.

he plays a cheap Fender acoustic guitar

we took out two mahogany pews from our church which are there for my use if I want them.....

rather than just sending him off with our prayers & best wishes, I'm thinking of sending him off with an acoustic guitar built from one of these pews. An all mahogany 000

so, after reading a fair few threads, pretty much treat the mahogany top like spruce, right?

Yeah that will make a wonderful gift. I built one mohagony topped dreadnought a long time ago and she still sounds wonderful. If I remember correctly I braced it just as I would a spruce top. I can't remember the top thickness but I believe it was on the thin side of a normal spruce top.

yeah, thanks Joe, I've seen that one....

and thickness a hair less than spruce. that figures.

OK, HOPEFULLY I'll get a chance to get into the church cellar tomorrow and have a rummage, but a former pastor died on Friday (he left about a year ago) so it's going to be an emotional service for everyone, so I might leave it a while.......

I haven't seen a Mahogany pew in a long time... the churches I go to now doesn't even have pews all they got is those fold up chairs. One church in Taiwan that I went to had pews made from pine. I wish good lumber was as easy to get in Taiwan as in the US.

Martin isn't in the US. He's in Ireland.

nearly forgot about this old thread......

so, here's the style of the pew.....

Image

these are the kneeler parts, 1" thick, ruler for reference.....

(how come the choir got carpet to kneel on while the rest of us had hard boards?)

Image

and after CNCing the bridge from a coffee table, & using an EIR fretboard from Stewmac.......

you really need to look hard to see the wings added to the front & back to get it wide enough...... and there's a lovely little ripple of figure above the bridge.....

the pup is an Artec under saddle piezo with a jackpin preamp. no controls, just plug & go. unplugged its a small bodied hog top, so it's quieter than a cedar topped jumbo ( duh ). plugged in? through a Roland Cube 60 with a little chorus & reverb? GORGEOUS!!

I'm REALLY pleased with this, and I hope Colin will be too!!

still needs a good polish......

Sadly there's only enough wood left for about another 15 or so guitars bliss

Here's a small all mahogany guitar I build about 7 years ago,it took a while to break in but sounds nice now.
It's based on a style 2 Martin ,B/R fingerboard and bridge.
The top bracing is laminated sitka/ebony/sitka.

Martin, it looks great!

That's such a cool idea and I'm sure he's going to love it!
