John, build it the way it was designed. You are going to add complexity, cost, and weight doing it your way. Plus, I have a set of drawer slides from woodcraft to sell ya.

I am thinking about making the Williams/Fleishman binding jig. One of the big complaints I hear about this Jig is that it takes up a lot of storage room. Otherwise people seam to love it. I saw one demoed at our Florida Luthier get-together and it is a pretty slick setup. We had talked about the possibility of instead of having one long 24 inch drawer, possibly having two drawers nested together. One drawer would extend out of the other which would extend out of the box like a telescope. Has anyone tried this? With them nested, it would reduce the space for storage, But I’m wondering if it would introduce some flex into the jig. John |

i would guess that if you use a high quality drawer slide that there wouldnt be an excessive amount of flex. i was surprised at how well the slides i used held the weight of the router and assembly even at full extension. you are going to save space in length with this method, but the box that holds the drawers is going to get larger in width and height. i suppose you would have to make the call as to whether or not those trade offs make the design worth it or not. i bought the slides and lazy susan from woodcraft, by the way. |

Thanks for the replies. When I finally get around to building a binding machine, I will probably follow a set of plans to the letter. Although, I might experiment with this idea a bit. First I need to actually build something that need binding.  John |
