Post subject:  One time Spiral Rosette

I made these spiral tiles last year sometime while doing some rosette design, I then moved on to a different style rosette, but since I went through the trouble to make them I decided to put them in a rosette. The center tile is 3x3 matrix of gaboon and maple, then wrapped with altnerating segments like a cinnamon roll, the stripes are ebony, maple, bloodwood, mahogany, jarrah, macasser/holly, gaboon, holly. For scale, the outside holly stripe between the gaboon is .006" plane shavings. I computer saturated the colors on the close-up so the different woods are easily visible. Rather than make this exact rosette again I'll likely replace the spiral with a true meander. Comments welcome.

That's a nice rosette, Marc! Good colors, and a nice "classical" look.

Thanks, Waddy and Mike, your comments are encouraging, I'm trying to decide whether I want to continue with this design. As you guys already know, settling on a rosette is a time commitment, once you start making tiles it's almost as easy to make a lot as a few.

Marc;
post the way you made this so we all can see your method.

Mike, I don’t have any photos of making the spiral, but basically I make a mini-mosaic tile that is 3x3 1mm squares then glue segments around like a cinnamon roll. If you look real close you can see the inner matrix, six maples and 3 ebony squares and the boundaries of the segments wrapped around.

Other than the segmented rolls on the spiral, I use the same technique as a regular mosaic,

Cut veneers, I’ve settled on 1mm thick,

Make columns then slice off 1mm thick planks,

Inlay tiles

Then inlay various purfling lines around the center mosaic in a symmetrical fashion until I reach the size rosette I want.
