Hello, I have started building a Padauk/Englemann nylon crossover guitar (lattice braced) on a Martin 00 style body and am a bit unsure of a proper neck angle for this one. I have planned out a 1 7/8" nut to compensate for the larger strings, however, I am not sure if 1.5 degree neck angle (my usual for steels) is too much for nylons. I am thinking maybe a .75 degree neck angle to compensate for both the string diameter and the 28' radius of the top???? Has anyone here had much experience with building nylon crossovers? Draw it out full size, in profile. Start with the top geometry, then your bridge, then your fingerboard thickness. Establish the string clearance, allowing for fret height. This will tell you what neck angel you need. Generally, for nylon string at the 12th fret, a 3mm high E & 4mm low E are considered standard. |

I don't want to hijack the thread but I would like to add to the question. Some Nylon crossovers have the neck angle tilted back like a steel string as opposed to a neck angle that is tilted up like on a traditional classical. I have a Taylor nylon string that has the neck angle set like a steel string. Maybe someone can here can say why the crossover should be different than a classical. |

If the whole top is domed, like in steel string guitars, that would account for the back angle. If it's like the only Taylor nylon string I have played, they might as well keep on making steel strings, as they have no future in nylon string guitars. |
